Protecting Students' Title VI Rights
During November 2023, the U.S. Department of Education issued a "Dear Colleague" letter reaffirming our obligations under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This federal law protects individuals from discrimination based on race, color, or national origin, including shared ancestry or ethnic characteristics, in programs or activities that receive federal funding.
Every student has a right to a learning environment that is inclusive, safe, and free from discrimination. The UNM community is devoted to bolstering these values through both policy and campus culture.
UNM recognizes that global and local events can increase social tension. We take our responsibilities under Title VI very seriously. If you experience or witness any form of discrimination, we encourage you to report it immediately through the appropriate channel, where it will be thoroughly investigated.
Each of us defines all of us, and the University of New Mexico is only strengthened by our differences — we thank you for your commitment to these vital principles.
