The University of New Mexico’s Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Queer (LGBTQ) Resource Center has achieved significant milestones since its inception. Starting as a student initiative, it has grown to offer a wide range of services and programs. Notable accomplishments include receiving a $300,000 grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration (SAMHSA) for suicide prevention and de-escalation training, establishing the first Rainbow Graduation, and initiating free, confidential HIV testing.
The Center has been instrumental in creating support networks through peer support groups and the Preferred Name Initiative, which allows students to use their affirmed names on university documents. It has also fostered community through events like the Grad Networking GAYla, the Transgender Day of Remembrance, and the AJAAS national conference. The Center's efforts have been recognized nationally, being ranked among the top LGBTQ-friendly colleges and receiving the Models of Hope Award.
Through its ongoing commitment to inclusivity, the LGBTQ Resource Center continues to provide vital resources, support, education, and advocacy for the LGBTQ community at UNM, serving UNM students, faculty and staff of all gender identities and sexual orientations.
Thank you for your continued support!
