On April 12, 2013, the Division for Equity and Inclusion, in collaboration with the Office of the President and Provost, will launch the Equity and Inclusion Survey.
The purpose of the survey is to assess attitudes, behaviors and perspectives of faculty, staff, and students about diversity, equity and inclusion and the manner in which it impacts the quality and extent of interactions on our campus. An outside consultant, Halualani and Associates, will administer the survey to ensure anonymity and confidentiality.
According to numerous studies, students’ experiences on their campus influence both learning and developmental outcomes. Faculty and staff who consider their campus climate healthy and inclusive are more likely to feel personally and professionally supported and connected to their campus. Everyone benefits from a positive, healthy and inclusive campus climate.
"From the Provost's Diversity Council, to the various ad hoc committees and task forces that have been assembled over the years, the need for an honest and accurate assessment of the climate on our campus has arisen time and time again," said Dr. Jozi De Leon, VP for Equity and Inclusion. "We are pleased to have an administration that supports the launching of the first campus climate survey to assess diversity, equity and inclusion perspectives on our campus.”
Participants can choose to be entered in a raffle for prizes of iPad minis, iPod Nanos and tuition vouchers (students only).
“The campus climate survey will be an important first step in reinforcing diversity and inclusion as strengths and assets of the University of New Mexico,” added De Leon. “Any diversity plan must begin with a sense of where we are so that we can assess where we want and need to go."

The University of New Mexico established the Division for Equity and Inclusion (DEI) in 2007 to strengthen the organizational capacity in order to serve UNM’s diverse student body. DEI provides leadership for addressing institution-wide equity and inclusion and lends its support to student, staff and faculty efforts that build on the university’s diversity initiatives. DEI supports system-wide diversity initiatives to enhance student recruitment and retention, academic excellence, employee diversity and a campus climate that embraces its diversity as an asset. In addition, the Office for Equity and Inclusion is the only university entity of its kind in a very diverse state, serving a diverse student population.
