Academic Leadership Faculty Fellowship

2021 Division for Equity and Inclusion
Academic Leadership Faculty Fellowship

Call for Applications

DEADLINE: October 23, 2020 at 12pm MST

The Division for Equity and Inclusion (DEI) invites tenured faculty who hold a primary appointment on Main campus and are interested in transforming how we support faculty are targets of harassment and bullying to apply for an appointment as DEI Academic Leadership Faculty Fellow in Spring 2021. Preference will be given to faculty members whose research interests, expertise and relevant university experience intersect with these concerns, including but not limited to faculty who are examining promising practices in restorative justice, formal and informal supports to targets of harrasment, bullying, and discrimination. Experience in department leadership, service in faculty governance or union roles, and/or participation in advocacy spaces that address racism, sexism, harrasment, and discrimination is preferred.

Fellow(s) will receive a one course buy-out (up to $5,000 transferred to the fellow’s academic unit) for Spring 2021 to develop a community of practice in restorative justice and formal institutional support for underrepresented racial and ethnic minority (URM), women, and all faculty, inclusive of sexual orientation, gender identity and expression (SOGIE). Given UNM’s Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) designation, examination of the unique needs presented by complex inequalities through a lens such as intersectionality (e.g., attention to the simultaneity of settler colonialism, structural racism, anti-Blackness, heteropatriarchy, racial capitalism and other overlapping systems of oppression and resistance) is required. All fellows are expected to have a sustained and demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion. DEI faculty fellows will conduct research, engage in praxis, including community-engaged scholarship and knowledge production, and be provided professional development to prepare them to consider pathways to executive leadership as scholar-administrators. Finally, DEI fellows will provide input on the UNM 2040 Strategic Plan by identifying research-based strategies that enhance institutional practices and accountability for reporting, investigating, providing appropriate remedies, and preventing bullying and harassment of faculty, especially Black, Indigenous and People of Color (BIPOC), Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Queer (LGBTQ), and women faculty.

By establishing stronger connections among relevant units, and tapping into available staff and faculty expertise, fellow(s) will work with senior faculty-administrators in DEI to develop recommendations for ehancing UNM’s capacity for effective response to the harassment and bullying of faculty.  At the end of the spring semester, the fellow(s) will offer deliverables that may include a report on national best practices; a summary of relevant research findings; and/or a flow-chart tracking both current and desired handling of misconduct, from receipt of complaints through sanctioning.

The DEI fellow(s) will work with Vice President for Equity and Inclusion (VPEI) Assata Zerai, Associate Vice President for Equity and Inclusion (AVPEI) Elizabeth Quay Hutchison, the Liaisons for Equity, Advocacy and Diversity (LEAD) Council, the UNM Truth Commission working group, and the Diversity Council’s Inclusive Climate-Restorative Justice Subcommittee, which together constitute a community of practice in restorative justice at UNM. Fellow(s) may also collaborate with the following partners on this initiative: LGBTQ-Resource Center, Academic Affairs, Office of Equal Opportunity, Faculty Ombuds, Compliance Office, Women’s Resource Center, the Office of Institutional Analytics, University Libraries, UNM-ADVANCE, the UNM Police Department, and other relevant units.

The DEI Fellow(s) will be expected to complete a semester-long fellowship Spring 2021 with the potential to renew for the Fall 2021 semester (pending availability of funds).
