The Division for Equity and Inclusion will hold the 4th Annual Luminaria Awards and Diversity Celebration Fundraising Brunch on Saturday, October 19, 2013. Typically held in the Spring, DEI has decided to postpone the awards in order to commit time and resources to the Equity and Inclusion Survey and other events around campus to address hate and bias incidents.
“We look forward to another wonderful and inspiring Luminaria Award and Diversity Celebration Event in the fall,” said Jozi De Leon, VP for Equity and Inclusion. “The best part of the event is the gathering of community and the recognition of individuals whose
work impacts us in so many ways.”
Nominations will continue to be accepted for the Luminaria and will be accepted through Friday, September 20, 2013 at 4pm. In New Mexico, luminarias are used to “light the way”. The word luminaria means a body that gives light. It also is a person of prominence or brilliant achievement. The Luminaria Awards recognize individuals and organizations that have lit the path in areas of diversity, equity, inclusion or social justice. Their commitment can be evident in recruitment and retention of underrepresented groups; teaching, research and/or service; multicultural or cultural awareness programming; social justice organizing, community outreach or other similar activities.
Recipients of the Presidential Luminaria Awards demonstrate an exemplary commitment to addressing diversity, equity, inclusion, or social justice at the University of New Mexico or in New Mexico; emerging or long-term commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion or social justice effort goes above and beyond the routine expectations of the job or project; provide evidence to support the contribution the individual(s) or unit has made in advancing diversity, equity, inclusion or social justice.
