New LGBTQ Resource Center Grand Opening and National Coming Out Day

October 11, 2017

Albuquerque, NM - The University of New Mexico is proud to announce the grand opening of the new LGBTQ Resource Center on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 from 4pm-6pm at 1919 Las Lomas Blvd (across from the new McKinnon Center for Management building/west of the University Club). The new, more accessible space was made possible through a state capital allocation by UNM Alumnus and New Mexico Senator Jacob Candelaria. The event will coincide with activities for National Coming Out Day.

“We are immensely excited and proud about this major milestone in the development of the LGBTQ Resource Center at the University of New Mexico,” said Lawrence Roybal, Interim VP for Equity and Inclusion and Interim Director of the LGBTQ Resource Center. “We look forward to a new era of advancing a variety of important initiatives alongside our LGBTQ family and our loyal allies.”

The new Resource Center is ADA compliant and features a training room, a study room, a kitchenette and a universal restroom. Featured speakers at the grand opening include President Chaouki Abdallah, Provost Craig White, Executive Director of Equality NM Adrian Carver and current and former students.

Also on Wednesday, October 11th, the LGBTQ Resource Center will celebrate National Coming Out Day from 11am-1pm in the UNM SUB Plaza. They day is designed to allow all people to honor their identities and to celebrate their holistic selves. The event is part of a national celebration of individuals who have come out as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer (LGBTQ) or as an ally.
