Health Sciences Center Office of Diversity to host Faculty of Color Networking Reception
ALBUQUERQUE, NM – The University of New Mexico’s Division for Equity and Inclusion, the Health Sciences Center Office of Diversity and their partners will host a Faculty of Color Networking Reception on Wednesday, December 5, 2012 from 4:00 pm to 6:00pm at the UNM Student Union Building Ballroom A.
"The racial and ethnic demographics of the student population in U.S. higher education has changed in recent years and even more dramatic shifts are projected over the coming decade,” according to the 2011 article, “A New Hope: Recruiting and Retaining the Next Generation of Faculty of Color,” by Luis Ponjuan, Marybeth Gasman, Elliott Hirshman and Lorenzo L. Esters. “Given these projections, it is imperative for higher education administrators to consider ways to recruit, retain and support a more demographically representative professoriate.”
Faculty of Color and allies are invited to join this event to network and connect UNM's faculty of color and create a social and intellectual space for community building across programs, departments, and campuses. “We are proud to welcome our new and returning faculty of color in partnership with many allies across the university,” said Jozi De Leon, VP for Equity and Inclusion. “We feel it is critical to nurture and support the faculty that mentor and ensure the success of our students.”
Additional partners of the Reception include: Chicana and Chicano Studies, ENLACE Statewide Collaborative, LGBTQ Resource Center, Graduate Resource Center, Native American Studies, Office of Graduate Studies, Southwest Hispanic Research Institute, Women's Resource Center, and Women Studies.
