Open to the Public

Prof. Alford’s research focuses on integrating innovative teaching methodologies that promote cultural competency and diversity awareness amongst health professions schools and law schools by addressing issues of ethnicity, race, and gender, which impact healthcare delivery and patient rights, with particular emphasis on historically marginalized populations. These are among her areas of scholarly interest:

  • The infamous story of Mrs. Henrietta Lacks, source of cells used by scientists worldwide for research yet who was never compensated
  • The overlooked effects on women in the notorious U.S. Public Health Services Syphilis Study at Tuskegee
  • The use of enslaved women for gynecological experiments

Prof. Alford will be in residence at UNM from June 11 through July 27 working on her writing and hosting sessions with UNM students, faculty, staff, and administrators. Prof. Alford will also be working with the wider New Mexico community while she is at UNM.
