Prof. Alford’s final public lecture at UNM this summer will examine the larger story connecting the three narratives that are the focus of her current research:
• Laws of U.S. enslavement denying the personhood of people of African descent, generally, and women, specifically, permitting the ‘human experimentation’ of Anarcha, Betsey, and Lucy at the hands of Dr. J. Marion Sims, known as the father of gynecology
• The US Public Health Services Syphilis Study at Tuskegee denying the personhood of women directly impacted by the study
• The denial of the personhood of Mrs. Henrietta Lacks, origin of HeLa cells, due to her multiple intersecting identities of race, class, and gender
