UNM Seal Committee Call for Submissions

 UNM Seal
Call for Design Submissions

The Board of Regents of the University of New Mexico (“UNM”), the UNM President, and the UNM Seal Committee, are pleased to announce the UNM Seal Call for Design Submissions, a request for original designs for consideration to become the next University Seal.  By submitting a design, you agree to abide by the Official Rules for the Call for Design Submissions as contained herein. hyperlink

Project Intent/Theme

The UNM Seal Committee is seeking design submissions for a new official seal that represents the past, present and future of The University of New Mexico. Founded in 1889, UNM sits on the traditional homelands of the Pueblo of Sandia. The original peoples of New Mexico – Pueblo, Navajo, and Apache Tribes – have significant connections to the land and the broader community statewide. UNM is the state’s flagship institution and one of only a dozen Hispanic-Serving Institutions in the United States. UNM is also classified by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education as an R1: Doctoral Universities with very high research activities.

A university seal is not a logo, but an official mark that is used on official insignia, diplomas, Presidential medallions, and other official documents. University seals are often circular in form, with imagery that can be considered representative of a University. Representations can be, for example, symbolic, scenic, abstract, architectural, or figurative. Designs that reflect UNM’s academic mission or the histories and futures of New Mexico’s flagship institution that also celebrate the many cultures which coexist within the state are optimal. For UNM’s mission, see http://www.unm.edu/welcome/mission.html). UNM Communication and Marketing will conduct information session(s) to provide submitters guidance and best practices for designing a university seal.

Review of Submissions

Submitted designs will be reviewed and rated by UNM’s Seal Committee Members, guided by  input from the general UNM Community.  The Committee will narrow the entries to up to five finalists who will be asked to make their designs camera-ready (finished, refined and suitable for reproduction) to be considered for final review and selection by the UNM Board of Regents.
Submissions will be reviewed and rated upon the following criteria:
a) Creativity and Originality
b) Quality and Execution (if submissions do not have to be camera ready when in the “proposal state” that the seal committee will see, how can we use quality and execution as criteria?)
c) Adherence to the Theme
d) Overall impression
Decisions of the Committee are final and binding with respect to all matters relating to the Call for Design Submissions.
The Board of Regents of the University of New Mexico are ultimately responsible for selecting the new UNM Seal.  This Call for Design Submissions in no way requires that the Board of Regents choose one of the submitted designs.
UNM will notify Submitters of the final outcome via the contact information provided at the time of submission.
Honorarium:

Upon submission of camera-ready designs, selected finalists will receive an honorarium of $505.

An honorarium of $1889 will be awarded to the final design selected by the Board of Regents to become the new University Seal.
